Permanent TSB is Ireland’s longest established Financial Services Provider and can trace its roots back to 1816. With over 2,000 staff and 1.1million customers, it is a significant provider of services to the retail market. With the launch of the Bank’s new ‘Vision and Values’ in 2017, the bank had an opportunity to build a culture of high-performance in a trusted and socially responsible way.

This would allow them to retain their most talented people, strengthen the bank commercially and grow market share. Critical to this was the ability of leaders across the organisation to engage in powerful conversations in a variety of situations including:

  • Performance Conversations
  • Coaching Conversations
  • Development Conversations
  • Career Conversations

Our Approach

Given the vast experience of people leaders in the Bank, it was critical that this programme was designed with a fresh perspective to learning.

We partnered with the team in Permanent TSB to design, develop and deliver a group-wide development offering that was designed to:

  • Raise people leadership capability across the bank
  • Elevate the quality of critical conversations for all levels of people leaders
  • Embed the group vision and values at all levels
  • Drive performance across the group

Partnering with the Permanent TSB Learning and Talent Team, we designed and delivered a development programme that included:

  • A two-day immersive “Leadership Laboratory” with an emphasis on learning through practice
  • Expert corporate role players
  • Live video analysis and peer feedback
  • Comprehensive pre and post workshop blended learning elements

Impact

Based on our experience and the latest research on evaluation and learning transfer, we create powerful insights for our clients covering participants’ mindset, confidence and their intent to transfer new capabilities back to their individual role.

The impact that the programme creates is measured using a combination of tools including virtual feedback tools, our online learning transfer platform and surveys with participants and their line managers. Based on our analysis of the data, we have been able to demonstrate that:

  • 100% of participants reported using a coaching style more frequently
  • 80% of participants are creating more opportunities to delegate work to their team
  • 2/3 of participants’ managers report that they are taking more time and effort to manage their team effectively
  • 50% of participants’ managers report a decrease in conflict across the team

While these results are encouraging, what is even more encouraging is the impact on engagement across the group with overall engagement rising from a very high 83% in 2017 to an even higher 86% in 2018.
